There have been some recent comments here regarding the availability of LANCER on DVD. First and foremost, the DVD's that are available -- whatever the source -- are hijacked copies of broadcast television. They are incomplete; with a run time of less than an hour, with as many as twelve minutes of deleted or heavily edited scenes. The quality is, by today's standards, fair at best; abysmal at its worse. Some of the sellers are hawking DVD's that are incomplete or of poor quality.
The point of this site is to encourage FOX to release the show in its most complete versions; with the episodes intact; with the full content. It would also be great to see the DVD's enhanced and brought forward to today's technology; hopefully in high definition.
True Lancer fans want to see the series professionally produced; brought to the screen and suitable for replay on modern, high-quality electronic gear. It would also be a plus if the remaining actors who created the characters could provide commentary. We can only hope.
None of this is going to happen if FOX believes there is no market for the show; or that people are content with second rate copies that have been severely edited to allow for commercial breaks. So what we need here is a concentrated effort to get FOX to see there is a genuine market, with a fan base willing to purchase a quality product.
So, why settle for a zircon when we could have a genuine diamond?
Fan support has succeeded in doing this for other shows. Let's work together to get this accomplished.
This blog is dedicated to the TV show, Lancer, which graced our screens in the late 1960's. It is also a tribute to the three actors who created the most indelible characters on that show: the patriarch, Murdoch Lancer (Andrew Duggan), eldest son and war hero, Scott Lancer (Wayne Maunder), and the "baby" of the family, the enigma that was Johnny Madrid...(James Stacy) We are also hoping to generate interest in getting the series released by FOX on DVD. Let your voices be heard.
Let's end this year and begin the next one with a renewed effort to get FOX to put Lancer out there. We need legitimate signatures; names please. And pass this on to your friends.

i agree lancer was my world as ateenager johnny was my first love and the show was great
DeleteLancer was one of the best westerns ever on TV. The storyline was fantastic and interesting. It dealt with real life and controversial issues - far more than Bonanza and other westerns before it. The actors were fantastic and right-on with their characters. I have no idea why it only ran for 2 seasons when it was, by far, a better show than many others that ran longer. I would be first in line to purchase a DVD of the series, and I have many other friends who would as well. From what I understand, there is a multi-country fan base. I think FOX would have no trouble finding a market for a remastered DVD of Lancer.
DeleteI check Amazon all the time for this show. They have it on there, as a possibility it will be released. I hope so. I have High Chaparall on the way, and want this one too. I was glad to get Alias Smith and Jone complete!
DeleteTo the Lancer fans,
DeleteI recently received a DVD set of Lancer from one of these
"unofficial" sources. Considering it is not on the air on TV
today at all, I admit the quality is not necessarily the
greatest and they are from 80's or 90's VHS tapes from
broadcast stations, but they are better than absolutely
nothing. As the old saying goes, Beggars can't be choosers. Take whatever you can get. The last time
I remember Lancer actually aired in the US was cable's
USA Network in the mid to late 80's, and they ran the
51 episodes as part of their Sunday Showdown TV
Western lineup along with The Virginian and Wanted--
Dead Or Alive, both of which are now on official DVD
and as complete series along with numerous other series
of those eras. I ought to know--I had them all on VHS once
upon a time from USA Network, they were edited in content
but as complete as possible under the circumstances at
the time. That was well over 25 years ago. I have not seen
it aired in this country since. According to the DVD's I
have from a source named in this blog previously those
copies mostly were from a station in Montreal, Canada.
The copies that are on Youtube are missing both their
opening and end credits, which are actually important
to a lot of us fans as they tell us who starred in the
show and who the guest stars in it were in each episode.
To me this ruins the original integrity of the material as
initially broadcast on CBS in the late 60's. I agree, Lancer
should be released uncut, in its entirety and restored if
possible. However, 20th Century Fox to my knowledge
still owns the rights to this series, and has apparently
chosen not to do anything with their original film prints
which are probably in their vaults deteriorating even as
we speak as other lost TV shows have been over these
numerous decades. Fox has released assorted shows
that belong to them including The Big Valley (but stopped
after the first half of Season 2; Timeless Media Group
has been licensed to release the rest of it recently)
and several of their 60's sci-fi shows including Lost In
Space. Daniel Boone (Fess Parker, 1964-70) another
Fox series has also been released, but not by that
studio, and instead by Liberation Entertainment in
excellent quality. Someone online contacted ME-TV
about airing Lancer and their response was that the
series was not "in the wrong format" for current
viewing in HD (I presume it is still on film and not on
videotape as most shows of the era were back then).
Lancer fans, if you want this show on DVD in the pristine
mint condition of its former glory on CBS, your best bet
probably is to contact Timeless Media Group or Shout
Factory. They have released numerous TV Western
series of the 50's through 70's, both long-running and
short-lived alike. That is the only way Lancer will ever
see legitimate official DVD release. If you are waiting
for Fox to do it, realistically speaking it is not going to
happen. Don't count on it. I know this site has not been
replied to in quite some time but I thought I would share
my opinion on the matter. Thanks for listening.
A fan and collector of the classic TV Western Series
of the 50's through 90's. I would rather watch the "old"
shows in general than the trash on network and cable
TV in 2014, especially reality shows.
That sentence should read "in the wrong format...."
DeleteMy apologies for the error.
I know I've signed at least one petition to get the "real" Lancer episodes released as quality DVDs. Is there a petition attached to this blog? Where can I sign? Count me in! Janne Etz, Cocoa Florida.
ReplyDeleteThe problem, Janne, is there are several petitions out there. What we need is a united effort and legitimate numbers from real people like you. The next step will be to get our counts to FOX, and to make them aware of not only this site, but U-Tube and other blog sites that are also generating solid numbers.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post!
I would love Lancer
ReplyDeleteDVD I have been looking for a long
Time. What can I
Do to help
would love it if someone knows how to write to James Stacy as a fan. I cant find any fan based address for him, The one above in the left corner is inactive.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone out there?
He does have an address under his real name
DeleteI have remembered the Lancer TV show from my childhood, the signature music and the cast were very special. I'm asking Fox network to release this series on DVD, I consider it a classic.
DeleteAngela
So, you are saying that the copy for sale from classics4lymphoma.com are actually heavily edited and junk?
ReplyDeleteI have such a set. They are better than nothing.
DeleteBest to take it in any condition--"hijacked" from
US or Canada broadcast television and edited
for content or not--than not have it at all.
Sorry if anyone else feels to the contrary.
James Stacy is a registered sex offender, so his address is published on the registry.
ReplyDeleteOkay, James Stacy has paid his debt to society. He has
Deletebeen punished enough. Leave him alone.
As it says in Matthew, "Judge not, lest ye be judged,"
Also Jesus said, "Let he who is without sin cast the
first stone."
That can apply to another post on this blog as well.

I have a real problem with people who post under the Anonymous tag line to put up stuff like this. And why here? What does your post have to do with anything regarding getting Lancer out there for people to see and enjoy? Where is your proof? Or are you a wannabe author that submitted a book that wasn't accepted?

DeleteI would like to see Lancer released on DVD, was thinking of buying it from one of the sites that I could find it but after reading this I think I will wait and hope it gets released officially and in better quality.
ReplyDeleteWould like to see this TV series brought to DVD and enhanced to today's standards.
ReplyDeleteIs there a group petition I can add my name to? I have a Lancer DVD set which is fair quality but I would love to have a digitally re-mastered set.
ReplyDeleteI also would like to see the show on a DVD that is of good quality. I loved this show and still enjoy the FanFiction site and the videos on the internet. Bring the series back on DVD.
ReplyDeleteI bought a set of Lancer DVDs and the quality of the picture is not very good. It's so poor, I didn't know that Wayne Maunder had blue eyes. However I was able to see all of the episodes and really enjoyed it. Why doesn't Fox release a quality version of this show that obviously has a following. It doesn't make sense when there are DVDs for Grizzly Adams and Wagon Train.
ReplyDeleteAlthough this is a new trend, yet there is something that online streaming cannot take away from the good-old DVDs rental services. dvds for sale
ReplyDeleteCan you buy Lancer on dvd? The real thing not a knock off.
ReplyDeleteI love the tv series Lancer. It had the perfect cast. I was so sad when James Stacy passed away. He was a man of great courage. Wayne Maunder is greatly missed. I wish all his movies were available on dvd. I bought Custer a few months ago & loved it. Give Wayne my best wishes. I wish him happiness always.
ReplyDeletePlease release on remastered DVD/Bluray.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see Lancer done on a Bluray, since the quality would be excellent if remastered. We can only hope.
DeleteI would love to see Lancer come out on DVD. It was one of the best western series ever made.
ReplyDeleteI am desperate to see this show on DVD! Please, Fox, release it!
ReplyDeleteI have been praying for them to release for years and still hope they will ..
ReplyDeleteI purchased a bootleg set of DVDs of Lancer, something I've only done twice, the other being Twelve O'Clock High. The disks are okay for the most part and are better than nothing, but I'd love to have a remastered set from Fox so I could really enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI'M IN SUPPORT, I HAVE BEEN A FAN SINCE I WAS 12 YEARS OLD, THE SERIES HAS ONLY BEEN SHOWN IN THE UK ONCE, BUT HAVE BEEN WATCHING IT AGAIN ON YOU TUBE
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a remastered set from Fox. What can I do to help?
ReplyDeleteDon't know why I came up Unknow? It said I was commenting a zammy922.
ReplyDeleteNow that CBS has just released Season 1 of Ben Casey and Our Miss Brooks, and has continued to release Season Sets of My Three Sons, perhaps there is a revival of older series being released on DVD. I hope Fox or Shout! will release Lancer soon. And it would be nice if Warner Brothers Archive would finally release 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Surfside 6, Bourbon Street Beat and Colt .45.
ReplyDeleteI am keeping all fingers and toes crossed for Lancer to be released. I adored Scott Lancer when I was a teenager. his name was all over my school books.
ReplyDeletePowers That Be, pay attention! I'd buy it. All fans who have already paid money for the bootlegged sets would gladly buy it, as well as copies for all their friends. And if Quentin Tarantino sees great value in "Lancer," don't you feel silly if you don't see the monetary possibilities?!

I loved Lancer and would love fox to put it out on Dvd
ReplyDeleteThis is insane that LANCER is not on blu-ray or dvd after the enormous success of Tarantino's movie that paid homage to the show. James Stacy is a fascinating fellow. There is intense interest out there in LANCER. Release LANCER on blu-ray NOW! You won't regret it!
ReplyDeleteI agree that Lancer should be on commerical DVDs!! You can watch them on Youtube but the quality isn't that good. I've loved that show for many, many years, H&I recently ran it but stopped.
ReplyDeletePLEASE put all of the Lancer episodes on DVD - uncut and unedited.
